Glenavy is in the middle of predominately dairy country and was named for Glenavy, Northern Ireland, the birthplace of former New Zealand Premier John Balance.
Glenavy is an awesome base for Anglers as the village is well placed at the mouth of the Waitaki River where catches of both Salmon and Trout are plentiful. Whitebaiting a certainty, netting near the entrance can also reward you with a catch of both Flounder and Mullet.
There is also a 24 hr self-service petrol station, school, hall, fire brigade, church. Everything that you need to make your stay an enjoyable one. The locals are very helpful when you need advice or a helping hand. There is a local pub and store which provide great meals and takeaway food.
